Introduction
Mandelic acid, also known as amygdalate, is a white oblique crystalline sheet. Melting point 119 C. Soluble in hot water, ether and isopropanol, insoluble in ethanol. Overexposure can cause discoloration and decomposition. It can be prepared by the reaction of benzaldehyde with acetophenone dibromide. It is a special reagent for the determination of zirconium in organic synthesis.
Character
Colorless flake or powder solid, discolored by light, slightly odorous. Melting point 119 C. The relative density is 1.300. Rotation - 158 (H2O). K = 4.3 x 10-4. It is soluble in hot water, ether and isopropanol. The melting point of R-type was 133 C, [alpha]-159.73 [ethanol], and racemization was gradually carried out at 160℃ . The melting point of S-type is 133.8, [alpha]+156.57 (water).
