What is a usable membrane?
Edible film is made of edible materials through mixing, heating, coating, drying and other steps. It is a kind of edible film that can preserve fresh food and has packaging protection function. It uses natural edible substances (such as polysaccharides, proteins, fats, etc.) as raw materials, and forms porous network membranes through the interaction of different molecules. It can cover the surface (or interior) of food by wrapping, coating and microcapsule. It can prevent the permeation of water vapor, other gases or various solutes, and play a protective role in ensuring the quality of food and prolonging the shelf life of food.
For decades, the glutinous rice paper used in candy packaging and the corn baking cup used in ice cream packaging are typical edible packaging. In recent years, the application of edible film in food packaging has been increasing. Edible film can effectively control many penetration phenomena in the process of food preservation, such as water vapor, oxygen, CO2 penetration. It can also effectively control the speed of small molecule mixtures entering and leaving packaging, thus effectively maintaining the quality of food.
Polysaccharide edible film
Polysaccharide edible film is made of polysaccharide, starch (including modified starch), edible gum and fiber derivatives. Because of its special long-chain helical molecular structure, polysaccharides have stable chemical properties and are suitable for long-term storage and various storage environments. They are hydrophilic polymers with good water solubility, which are suitable for packaging instant food.
Pullulan polysaccharide film is an important kind of edible polysaccharide film. Pullulan film has excellent water solubility, water solubility stability, digestibility, impermeability, plasticity, cohesiveness, firmness, elasticity and excellent film-forming properties. It can produce safe and non-toxic foodstuff film with good properties such as closeness, light resistance, oil resistance, printability, water solubility, thermal sealing and so on.
Pullulan can be fermented directly from starch hydrolysates, sucrose or other sugars. It is soluble in water, low in viscosity, non gelatinization and aging. It can be processed arbitrarily and has no toxic side effects. Dry Pullulan polysaccharide powder is a white non-hygroscopic substance, easy to dissolve in hot or cold water, non-toxic, odorless, tasteless, non-mutagenic, edible. Since mammalian amylase can not degrade pullulan polysaccharides, it provides little heat, can be used as human dietary fiber, and can be used as a probiotic source to promote the growth of beneficial bifidobacteria. Pullulan polysaccharide can also partly replace starch  in pasta or baked food, and can inhibit the growth of fungi in food.
