At present, most of the antioxidants used in food are chemical synthetic substances, such as BHA and BHT, which have been banned in some countries because of their safety reasons. Therefore, the research and development of natural antioxidants has always been an important topic in the field of food and biology.
A large number of peanut shells are produced every year in China, and peanut shells contain a small amount of flavonoids, mainly luteolin, in addition to a large number of carbohydrates and crude fibers. It is a kind of antioxidant substance, which has the winning function of lipid oxidation, delaying senility and enhancing immunity. Luteolin is a kind of flavonoids that exist in many plant bodies, and shows greater antioxidant activity than BHT in inhibiting the formation of malondialdehyde in palm oil.
Ethanol reflux is a common method of extracting luteolin from peanut hulls. This process essentially consists of mixing the powdered hulls with 70 percent ethanol to obtain a liquid/solid ratio of 20:1. This mixture is then heated at 85 degrees Celsius for at least 1.5 hours. The vapor that comes off the mixture is high in luteolin, which can be further concentrated to a high level of purity.
Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Inhibits LPS-induced TNF-α, IL-6 and inducible nitric oxide production and blocks NF-κB and AP-1 activation. Also inhibits TNF-α -induced COX-2 expression. Antiproliferative and chemopreventative; inhibits proliferation of Lewis lung carcinoma cells in vivo.
Luteolin, is a common flavonoid, has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-allergy and anticancer, has been used in Chinese traditional medicine for treating various diseases such as hypertension, inflammatory disorders, and cancer.
Luteolin can reduce production of proinflammatory mediators and inhibit LPS-induced IL-6 production in the brain by inhibiting the JNK signaling pathway and activation of AP-1 in microglia, also shows potent anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) signaling in immune cells, thus, could be a promising candidate to develop immuno-modulatory and neuroprotective therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.[2-3]
Luteolin induces apoptosis in various cancer cells, one mechanism through death receptor 5 (DR5) upregulation, treatment with luteolin might be promising as a new therapy against cancer.
Luteolin attenuates TGF-β1-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition of lung cancer cells by interfering in the PI3K/Akt–NF-κB–Snail pathway, strengthen the anti-cancer effects of flavonoid compounds via the regulation of migration/invasion and EMT ability of various cancer cells.
Uses of Luteolin
The uses of luteolin in health supplements primarily relates to its ability to manage inflammatory conditions. These uses include support for memory and the nervous system in addition to antioxidant effects.
